Kolkata, June 2: Amit Banerjee and Lata Banerjee, parents of Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, have approached the Calcutta High Court to contest a notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). They filed a petition seeking the cancellation of the notice.
The couple asserts that the construction related to the notice was entirely legal. The court is expected to hear the case next Wednesday in its vacation bench.
Recently, the KMC sent notices to several addresses associated with Abhishek Banerjee. On Saturday, he addressed the media at his residence in Kalighat, stating that the municipal corporation must clarify where the alleged discrepancies in construction occurred.
He remarked, “The corporation should specify which part of the building violates regulations. The notice only mentions ‘deviation’ without indicating where it is. I have provided them with a written response and will approach the court if necessary.”
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee’s company, Leaps and Bounds, has requested an additional ten days from the KMC. The company expressed its readiness to provide all requested information but needs time to gather the necessary documents.
The KMC has issued multiple notices concerning properties registered under Abhishek Banerjee and his company on Kalighat Road and Harish Mukherjee Road.
According to the KMC, these notices were issued under Section 401 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act. They request documents related to the approved building plans, construction papers, and permits for additional construction. An investigation is underway to determine if any construction deviated from the approved plans.
Some media reports claim that notices have been issued for a total of 17 properties, including those registered under the names of some of Abhishek Banerjee’s relatives.
However, Abhishek Banerjee maintains that he will not provide a detailed response until the KMC specifies which part is illegal.
