Abhishek Banerjee to Appear Before ED Today in Cash-for-Job Case

Kolkata, June 15: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Lok Sabha MP, will appear today at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office located in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He has been summoned for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into the cash-for-job scandal in West Bengal, which involves millions of rupees.

The ED had issued a notice to Banerjee on June 3, instructing him to report to their Salt Lake office by noon today. He is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee’s name appeared in a charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigating the school-job case; however, he has not been named as an accused. His name also surfaced during the ED’s investigation, as indicated in the charge sheet.

According to ED sources, Banerjee has been called back to the office to help reach a logical conclusion regarding his involvement. His statement will be recorded today.

This appearance comes just a day after Banerjee underwent an extensive eight-and-a-half-hour questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police. This inquiry was related to discrepancies involving signatures from some TMC legislators concerning key appointments reserved for the opposition in the assembly.

Additionally, Banerjee is scheduled to appear at the CID headquarters in Bhawani Bhavan, South Kolkata, on June 16 for questioning related to an FIR lodged against him. He faces allegations of inciting violence before the recent assembly elections in the state and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

CID officials had sent him a notice regarding this matter on the evening of June 12. Banerjee has previously stated his willingness to cooperate fully with any investigating agency, as he has always done.
