New Delhi, March 6: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest on Friday against the government’s decision to bar opposition legislators from entering the Delhi Assembly premises. Led by Delhi state president Saurabh Bhardwaj, a large number of party workers and legislators gathered outside the assembly, vocally opposing the government’s actions.
During the protest, supporters chanted slogans in favor of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, including “Kejriwal, you stand firm, we are with you.”
Kejriwal was summoned to appear before the Assembly’s privilege committee. AAP leaders and workers alleged that the government was deliberately preventing opposition legislators and media from entering the assembly premises.
Bhardwaj criticized the government, claiming that the BJP’s fear was behind the decision not to live-stream the committee proceedings. He expressed concern that Kejriwal might reveal truths that could expose the government’s political agenda.
He asserted that it was unprecedented in the country’s history for a committee to summon its own former Speaker and Chief Minister. Bhardwaj highlighted that for the past 10-11 years, AAP has operated the Delhi Assembly committees with transparency, allowing media access to observe proceedings in various cases.
He emphasized that a committee functions like a “mini-house,” and maintaining transparency is a fundamental requirement of democracy. He found it perplexing that the BJP would fear live streaming. If the government did not wish to broadcast the proceedings, at the very least, the media should have been allowed to attend. Instead, the government barred media access and prevented several legislators from entering, which he deemed contrary to democratic traditions.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, criticized the government for focusing on targeting Kejriwal instead of addressing the real issues facing Delhi.
She pointed out severe problems in the capital, such as pollution, potholes, increasing garbage, water shortages, and sewer overflows, stating that the government has failed to take concrete steps to address these issues. Atishi accused the BJP government of deteriorating Delhi’s condition within a year and said the public is demanding answers. She alleged that the government is diverting attention from real issues by creating political controversies.
Additionally, AAP’s chief whip Sanjeev Jha also condemned the government, highlighting critical issues like water scarcity, pollution, Yamuna cleaning, and basic infrastructure that require attention. He stated that instead of resolving these problems, the government is entangled in political blame games. Jha concluded that the people of Delhi are now demanding accountability from the BJP government regarding development projects and solutions to the capital’s problems.
