Imphal, April 20: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a complete shutdown in Manipur from midnight on April 20 to midnight on April 23. This decision comes in response to the brutal killings of two Naga citizens.
The announcement was made during an emergency meeting held at the UNC headquarters. Representatives from the All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and various top Naga organizations participated in the meeting.
The gathering was convened to condemn the incident that occurred in TM-Kasom village. Two Naga citizens, Chainaoshang Shokvungnao (45) and Yaruingam Washum (42), were reportedly stopped and killed by Kuki militants while traveling on National Highway 202.
The UNC and the participating organizations unanimously passed several resolutions. All government and private institutions, shops, and vehicular movement will be completely halted for 72 hours, excluding emergency services. During this mourning period, all social and economic ties with the Kuki community will be suspended. A collective mourning assembly will be held on April 23 at 6:30 PM in all Naga district headquarters and Imphal.
The UNC criticized the state government, pointing out that the incident occurred just one day after the Chief Minister and Home Minister’s visit to Ukhrul. The council has demanded that the state government take moral responsibility for the security lapse.
UNC leaders stated that this attack on the dignity and territorial integrity of the Naga community is intolerable. They urged all Naga citizens and organizations to fully support the shutdown and mourning activities. The meeting concluded with a minute of silence led by CNPF President Thamdok Francis.
This incident once again highlights the ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur. Naga organizations assert that repeated occurrences of such violence are fueling anger and insecurity within the Naga community.
The UNC has issued a clear warning that if the state government fails to ensure security, more stringent actions will be taken.
