Washington, August 1 (H.S.) – The 25% tariff imposed by the United States on Indian imports will now come into effect from August 7. The White House announced this just hours before the original deadline of August 1.

The US has introduced new tariffs on several countries, including India, which will now be implemented from August 7. As per the new structure, India faces a 25% tariff, while Canada will face a 35% tariff. The US has also indicated that additional import duties may be imposed on India due to its ongoing arms and oil trade with Russia.
Among the countries listed for highest tariffs, Syria tops with a 41% tariff, followed by Laos and Myanmar at 39%, Switzerland at 35%, Bangladesh at 20%, and Pakistan at 19%.
Earlier on April 2, US President Joe Biden had announced new tariffs on 92 countries globally. The implementation was initially delayed by 7 days and later deferred for 90 days. The 25% tariff on Indian goods, which was scheduled to begin on August 1, will now be enforced from August 7.
A day earlier, on Thursday, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal addressed Parliament regarding the US tariff issue. He assured that any decision would be taken in the national interest. Meanwhile, US President Biden had also stated that discussions with India on the tariff matter were still ongoing.
