Many people rely on artificial intelligence to improve their writing, photos, or videos. YouTube has also been enhancing the look of users’ uploaded videos through AI, but has done so quietly and without direct notification to creators.

Creators Raise Objections Over Lack of Consent

Several creators have expressed their frustration—not only about their videos being “enhanced” but also about YouTube doing it without their consent. There is an ongoing debate about whether YouTube’s AI intervention can really be called an “improvement.” Many creators have noticed changes in the appearance of their uploaded videos for some time, even though they had not made any adjustments themselves. After months of speculation, Google has now confirmed that YouTube has indeed been applying AI enhancements to videos.

Debate Over AI-Powered Upscaling

There were theories that AI-powered upscaling was being used on videos. However, YouTube has denied this, stating that it is not using generative AI or upscaling. Instead, the company says it is running an experiment on select YouTube Shorts using traditional machine learning technology to unblur, denoise, and improve clarity in videos during processing—similar to what a modern smartphone does when recording a video.

Concerns Over Transparency and Trust

Some creators, like Rhett Shull, have voiced concerns in their videos and on social media. Shull questioned whether YouTube was secretly applying AI filters to Shorts without informing creators. After speaking with other creators and observing similar reports online, it became clear to him that a form of non-consensual AI enhancement was being applied. He called this a major issue that could erode the trust between creators and their audience.

For many creators, the main concern is not just the technical changes but the lack of transparency from YouTube. While the company says it intends to provide the best video quality, creators believe they should be notified and given a choice.

Impact on Creators and Audience Trust

The lack of communication has led to confusion among viewers, with some accusing creators of using AI when they claim not to. This situation undermines trust in both Google and individual creators, placing the responsibility on the platform.

Google’s response to user complaints highlights that YouTube is always working to improve video quality and will continue to consider creator and viewer feedback as it develops these features.
