New Delhi, August 8: An 18-year-old man was swept away by the raging waters of a drain near Priyanka Camp in Sarita Vihar, Delhi, and is currently missing.
The incident occurred on Friday night while he was returning home from Noida amid heavy rainfall in the Delhi-NCR region.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call reporting the boy’s disappearance was received at Sarita Vihar Police Station on August 7. The call was assigned to Sub-Inspector Roshan Lal for necessary action. Acting promptly, SI Roshan Lal and his team arrived at the Priyanka Camp drain area, where the complainant, Manish, was present.
During the inquiry, Manish informed the police that his friend, Ankit, was returning from Noida when the incident took place.
Police reported that as Ankit approached the Priyanka Camp drain, he slipped on the road due to accumulated water, lost his balance, and was swept away by the fast-moving current. Heavy rainfall in the area had rapidly increased the water level, intensifying the flow in the drain.
Bystanders immediately attempted to rescue the young man and called for help from nearby residents. However, the swift current thwarted their efforts. Upon receiving the report, Sarita Vihar Police arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation.
A large-scale search operation was launched with the assistance of the DDMA East Rescue Team and the Delhi Fire Service. Despite continuous efforts throughout the night and into the following day, the missing young man has not yet been located.
Authorities have stated that rescue teams are continuing their search in the drain and surrounding areas.
However, the ongoing heavy rainfall, swift water flow, darkness, and debris accumulated in the drain are hindering the search efforts. Local residents and volunteers have also joined in the search operations.
This incident comes at a time when Delhi-NCR is grappling with persistent rainfall. Reports of severe waterlogging, traffic jams, and disruptions to daily life have emerged from various parts of Delhi, Noida, and Haryana over the past two days.
Officials are working to manage the situation, as heavy rainfall continues to disrupt normal movement throughout the area.
