New Delhi, March 24: The central government is preparing to introduce two significant bills in Parliament aimed at implementing one-third reservation for women in legislative bodies. This initiative has been welcomed by female MPs from various parties, who view it as a crucial step towards women’s empowerment and inclusive development.
Previously, this reservation was linked to the upcoming census and seat delimitation under the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023. The government is now considering separating this reservation from the census and delimitation process. This means that the reservation for women will no longer be stalled due to pending census results.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also met with leaders of non-Congress opposition parties to build political consensus on this matter. The government aims to garner broad support for this change in Parliament.
The proposed bill will introduce significant amendments to the Women’s Reservation Act. Initially, this reservation depended on the next census and subsequent delimitation. However, due to delays in the census, the government is contemplating implementing this reservation based on the 2011 census.
BJP MP Kamaljeet Sahrawat stated that the Prime Minister has already clarified his vision, which is encouraging for women’s empowerment. Over the past decade, several new policies have been implemented for women’s development. Today, women are ready to excel in every field.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also welcomed this move, stating that women will finally receive their long-awaited rights. The reservation, previously tied to the next census and delimitation, will now expand parliamentary seats based on the 2011 census, ensuring women receive genuine representation, respect, and equality.
JD(U) MP Lovely Anand described this as a positive step, emphasizing that the country can only progress when women are not confined to their homes.
Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajni Patil expressed her support for the initiative, recalling that Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation for women’s reservation, which must not be forgotten.
Samajwadi Party MP Ikra Hasan noted that this bill should have passed much earlier, but its proper implementation is now essential. She expressed her happiness that the government is considering this.
If this bill is enacted, it could significantly alter India’s political landscape. The number of seats in the Lok Sabha may increase from the current 543 to approximately 816, with 273 seats reserved for women. This will ensure that the new reservation does not disadvantage existing members, who are predominantly male, leading to a more inclusive and balanced structure in Parliament.
The majority required in the Lok Sabha will also rise to 409. Currently, the NDA does not possess the necessary numbers to pass this amendment alone, but the government is making every effort to ensure its passage during the ongoing budget session, which concludes on April 4.
