Chandigarh, March 30: The Shiromani Akali Dal has faced a significant setback in Punjab as several leaders have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Among those who switched allegiance are SGPC member S. Charanjit Singh Kalewal, National General Secretary S. Ramandeep Singh Bharowal, Senior Vice President S. Bhupinder Singh (Titu), and senior Akali leader S. Avtar Singh Ramewal from the Nakodar constituency.
BJP Punjab’s acting president Ashwani Sharma welcomed these leaders and took the opportunity during a press conference to launch a sharp attack on opposition parties.
He stated that three prominent leaders have joined the BJP, influenced by the party and Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally. These leaders believe that only the BJP can free Punjab from drug abuse, restore farmers’ rights, and lead the state towards development.
Sharma emphasized that they joined the BJP to support the mission of making Punjab drug-free and ending the era of lawlessness.
In a conversation with the media, Sharma asserted that no one has the right to insult any religion. He criticized the Punjab government’s chief minister for promising justice in the sacrilege cases within 40 days, stating that Punjab is still waiting for that justice. With the government’s countdown beginning, they have now introduced a bill related to this issue.
He further attacked the Punjab government for politicizing the police administration and intimidating officials, noting that even DM-level officers are under pressure. He insisted that any bill introduced should contain provisions to prevent misuse out of political vendetta.
Sharma also criticized Congress, stating that they often transition from opposing PM Modi to opposing the nation without realizing it. He stressed that national interest should always come first. While there are many political issues and times for debate, during a crisis, Congress is spreading confusion, lying, and causing panic among the people.
