Western Australia is grappling with severe wildfires that have led to significant disruptions in the southern region. Roads have been closed, and residents of nearby towns have been ordered to evacuate as the fires pose serious threats to life and property.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued an alert on Friday morning, warning of the danger caused by a large fire in Fitzgerald River National Park, located about 420 kilometres southeast of Perth along the southern coast. The fire began on January 16 due to a lightning strike and has since consumed over 60,000 hectares of land.
Authorities have issued evacuation orders for several towns, including Ravensthorpe, which has a population of around 2,000. Residents and travellers have been urged to leave immediately if it is safe to do so. The DFES alert stated, “You are in danger and need to take immediate action to survive.” Those choosing to stay have been advised to remain indoors due to extreme heat risks.
In response to the fire, a major highway west of Ravensthorpe has been shut down, and an evacuation centre has been opened in Newdegate to the north. The fire in Fitzgerald River National Park is one of four major blazes burning across southwestern Australia this Friday morning.
Additionally, evacuation orders have been issued for four smaller towns located about 120 kilometres southeast of Perth, affecting approximately 1,500 residents. The fire is spreading rapidly northeast, prompting authorities to prioritise safety measures and evacuations in the path of the blaze.
Near Fitzgerald River National Park, low-level emergency warnings have also been issued for areas including Dunn Rock Nature Reserve, 60 kilometres to the north, and the small town of Green Range, 130 kilometres southwest. Residents in these zones are advised to monitor the situation closely and prepare to evacuate if conditions worsen.
