New Delhi, 19 November (Daily Kiran). Winter arrives with an abundance of nutritious green leafy vegetables, and traditional Indian diets give special importance to seasonal greens such as spinach (palak), bathua and fenugreek (methi). For generations, elders have emphasised their consumption during the colder months, citing multiple health benefits. Experts say both scientific research and Ayurvedic principles strongly support the inclusion of these greens in winter meals.

Fenugreek is among the first greens to appear in local markets as winter begins. Though it requires time to clean and prepare, fenugreek is known for its rich medicinal properties. Ayurveda describes methi as warm in nature, effective in balancing vata and kapha, improving appetite and supporting digestion. Scientifically, fenugreek is high in fibre, making digestion easier, and it also helps strengthen immunity.

Spinach helps reduce pitta dosha and supports an increase in haemoglobin levels. From a scientific perspective, spinach is rich in iron and magnesium, which help ease muscle stiffness and improve overall blood health. Mustard greens (sarson), an essential part of winter meals and a key ingredient in traditional saag, are considered cooling in nature yet energising. They help reduce kapha and contain Vitamins A, K and E, which support body strength and enhance skin appearance.

Bathua is known in Ayurveda for its ability to control vata and kapha, helping maintain energy levels and reducing the likelihood of winter-related ailments like cold and cough. Its regular consumption also eases digestive discomforts such as gas, bloating and acidity. Bathua keeps the stomach clean and is often credited for improving skin glow during winter.

Amaranth (chaulai), consumed both as a vegetable and in the form of winter laddoos, is another highly beneficial green. Ayurveda considers it warm in nature, helpful in calming vata and purifying the blood. It is rich in plant protein and contains a good amount of calcium.

With so many scientifically backed and Ayurvedic benefits, experts recommend making these green vegetables a regular part of winter meals to stay healthy and energised throughout the season.
