New Delhi, August 14: According to provisional data released by the government on Friday, the wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rate in India for July 2026 has slightly eased to 9.78%, down from 9.87% in June 2026, based on the 2022-23 base year. This indicates a minor reduction in wholesale inflation, although it remains at a high level.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported that the WPI for all commodities stood at 110.0 in July, compared to 110.2 in June 2026. While there was a slight decrease in the overall index, price pressures persisted in several key categories.
During July, inflation for primary articles was recorded at 8.52%, up from 7.00% in June. Similarly, the inflation rate for manufactured products increased to 8.29%, compared to 7.48% in the previous month. Conversely, the inflation rate for the fuel and energy category decreased from 27.41% in June to 20.05% in July, yet it remains significantly high.
In July, the index for primary articles was 117.2, for fuel and energy it was 105.4, and for manufactured products, it was 108.4. In June, these figures were 116.1, 111.1, and 107.8, respectively.
Government data indicates that the main contributors to the rise in wholesale inflation in July included mineral oils (petroleum products), food items, basic metals, non-food primary products, food manufacturing, and chemicals. The price increases in these sectors had a noticeable impact on overall wholesale inflation.
Notably, the WPI food index saw an increase in inflation, reaching 6.65% in July 2026, compared to 6.14% in June 2026. This suggests that pressure on food prices continues to persist.
The ministry also revised the figures for May 2026. The final WPI for May was adjusted from an initial estimate of 109.9 to 110.1, resulting in an increase in the WPI inflation rate from 9.68% to 9.88%.
The government stated that the final figures for May 2026 were prepared based on a weighted response rate of 98.14%, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the data.
Additionally, the final output Producer Price Index (PPI) for May 2026 was also revised, increasing from an initial estimate of 109.6 to 109.9.
For the manufacturing sector, the all-India trial input Producer Price Index (PPI) was recorded at 105.9 in July 2026. The final input PPI figure for May 2026 was also revised from an initial estimate of 104.9 to 106.5.
