Washington, August 14: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new 100% tariff on the import of unmanned drones and their components. According to the White House, this decision is based on national security concerns. The aim is to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, particularly China, in the drone sector.
The White House statement indicates that specific types of unmanned aerial systems will be subject to the 100% tariff. This includes larger drones weighing over 25 kilograms and systems that possess sensitive capabilities from a national security perspective.
Technologies such as thermal imagers and docking stations, which are used in advanced drone operations, fall under these capabilities. Smaller drones will face a reduced tariff of 25% under the new policy.
The White House stated that these tariffs aim to boost domestic production of drones and their components in the U.S. The administration claims that these measures will decrease reliance on foreign supply chains and help develop a robust drone manufacturing industry within the country.
China currently plays a significant role in the global drone market. Studies indicate that DJI, a Chinese company established in 2006, has captured over two-thirds of the world’s drone market in recent years.
These new U.S. tariffs come at a time of escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, particularly in sectors related to advanced technology and national security. Most of the new tariff rates are expected to take effect on September 3.
This announcement follows China’s recent actions, where Beijing announced restrictions on drone exports to the U.S. and blacklisted six companies. China stated that this move was a response to U.S. trade restrictions related to forced labor and national security. This action from China came just days after the U.S. imposed new tariffs on China and 59 other countries.
With these latest measures, drones and related components have joined the growing list of products affected by trade restrictions between the world’s two largest economies.
Washington asserts that the new tariffs will strengthen domestic production and reduce reliance on imported drone technology. However, this entire dispute deepens the existing tensions between the two nations regarding trade, technology, and national security.
