WHO Representative Dr. Hutin Takes Charge in India, Document Handed Over to Ciby George

New Delhi, June 13: India’s Foreign Secretary (West) Ciby George met with Dr. Ivan Hutin, the newly appointed World Health Organization (WHO) representative in India. Dr. Hutin officially took on his role in May 2026 and has now handed over his credentials to the Foreign Secretary.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced on social media platform X, stating, “Secretary (West) Ciby George received documents from Dr. Ivan Hutin, the WHO representative in India. The Secretary wished him a successful tenure.”

According to information shared by the WHO, Dr. Hutin began his duties as the WHO representative in India in May 2026. Prior to this, he served as the Director of the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) department at the WHO headquarters, where he led global efforts to address some of the world’s most significant public health challenges.

Dr. Hutin brings over three decades of experience in international public health, covering areas such as clinical medicine, epidemiology, infectious diseases, and global health leadership. He earned his MD in Hepato-Gastroenterology from France and later completed an MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He also worked with the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and obtained a PhD from the Swiss Tropical Institute.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hutin has worked across Africa, Europe, and Asia, including roles in Burkina Faso, Uganda, and at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in Sweden.

With over 20 years of experience with the WHO at national, regional, and headquarters levels, he has played a crucial role in advancing major public health programs worldwide.

Dr. Hutin was instrumental in establishing the Safe Injection Global Network (SIGN). Additionally, he has supported India in setting up its Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) and led efforts related to the prevention and control of Hepatitis B in China. He has also coordinated strategic information for the Global Hepatitis Program.
