New Delhi, March 20: The messaging app WhatsApp is set to introduce features such as usernames and unique IDs on its platform. This will allow users to message, voice, and video call other WhatsApp users without revealing their phone numbers, according to reports.
The new feature is expected to roll out globally in June 2026. It will enable both individuals and businesses to have unique names or handles, similar to other social media platforms.
In a statement, the company expressed excitement about the upcoming username feature, stating, “We are thrilled to bring usernames to WhatsApp, allowing people to connect with new friends, groups, and businesses without sharing their phone numbers.”
This feature is anticipated to be optional, enabling users to continue using their phone numbers if they choose. The move aims to prevent disruptions and retain users who might consider switching to competing platforms.
Additionally, reports indicate that WhatsApp is contemplating a dynamic pricing model for businesses, allowing companies to bid in real-time for sending marketing messages.
Trials for this new system are likely to begin in the second half of 2026, with implementation expected in 2027.
With over 500 million users, India remains one of WhatsApp’s key markets globally. A report released in February highlighted that social media platforms influence 77% of retail shopping decisions in India, with Meta platforms playing a crucial role in 96% of social discovery.
The report from Meta and the Retailers Association of India (RAI) noted that short-form videos and creators are accelerating product discovery, as 97% of consumers watch short videos daily, spending 60% of their time on Facebook and Instagram watching videos.
Furthermore, the report revealed that 72% of product discovery occurs on the messaging platform WhatsApp.
