Kolkata, July 11: The West Bengal government has established a nine-member committee to review and finalize the draft bill for the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) 2026. Retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will chair this committee. The government issued a notification regarding this development on Friday.
According to the notification from the West Bengal judicial department, the state government has formed this committee to examine the draft bill before it is presented in the assembly. The government believes that given the complexity and breadth of the subject, a thorough review of the draft bill is essential. The formation of the committee was approved based on a decision made during the state cabinet meeting on July 2.
The committee, chaired by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, includes former Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, IAS officer Dushyant Nariyala, retired IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, Principal Secretary of the Home Department Sanghamitra Ghosh, retired Associate Professor Ratna Bhattacharya from Bangabasi College, former Vice-Chancellor of Gour Banga University Gopalchandra Mishra, lawyer Osman Ghani Malik from the Calcutta High Court, and former Executive Director of the division Nirmalya Bhattacharya.
The notification states that this decision aligns with Article 44 of Part IV of the Indian Constitution, which encourages the state to strive for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code for its citizens.
The government aims to create a uniform legal framework for personal civil matters such as marriage, divorce, intestate succession, and testamentary succession for residents of all religions, beliefs, and communities through the draft of the “Uniform Civil Code, West Bengal – 2026.”
