TMC Leader Seeks Disqualification of 10 Rebel MLAs in Supreme Court
TMCs Shobhan Deb Chattopadhyay petitions Supreme Court for disqualification of 10 rebel MLAs, including opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee.

Kolkata, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shobhan Deb Chattopadhyay filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Friday, seeking the disqualification of 10 rebel MLAs led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Among those targeted are opposition leader Banerjee and former Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Firhad Hakim.
This petition was lodged against Speaker Rathindra Bose for failing to take action on the matter, with the 10 rebel MLAs named as respondents. A hearing on the case is expected next week.
Chattopadhyay has approached the Supreme Court regarding this issue for the second time. Earlier in September, he had filed a similar petition demanding the dismissal of these 10 rebel MLAs.
During a hearing on September 28, the Supreme Court stated that if any application was presented to the West Bengal Assembly Speaker, it should be resolved within three months. The court expressed hope that the Speaker would adhere to this timeline.
The first application from the faction led by Mamata Banerjee was submitted to the Speaker on July 8, setting an October 8 deadline for a decision. However, as no announcement has been made by the Speaker, the matter has been brought back to the Supreme Court’s attention.
In addition to Banerjee and Hakim, the petition also seeks the disqualification of Sandipan Saha, Arup Roy, Shiuli Saha, Akhtaruzzaman, Sabina Yasmin, Rathin Ghosh, Biplab Mitra, and Javed Ahmed Khan. The principal secretary of the Assembly has also been named in the case. Chattopadhyay is calling for the dismissal of the MLAs under the anti-defection law.
