Kolkata, July 11: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the family of Indrajit Tanti, who was brutally murdered on July 5. The 26-year-old was killed in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, after being wrongfully suspected in the death of a 12-year-old girl.
Violence erupted in the area following the discovery of the girl’s body in a local pond on the morning of July 5. Amid the chaos, a mob allegedly beat Tanti to death, mistakenly linking him to the girl’s tragic fate. Subsequent police investigations cleared him of any involvement.
Chief Minister Adhikari confirmed that Tanti had no role in the rape and murder of the minor, declaring him innocent. On Saturday, he visited Baruipur to inaugurate a police station in the area where the girl was allegedly assaulted and where Tanti lost his life.
During his visit, Adhikari met with Tanti’s family and presented them with the compensation check. He also announced that the victim’s older brother would be offered a position as a civic volunteer with the state police.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government stands with both families affected by these tragic events. He assured that no criminals involved in either case would be spared. He expressed gratitude to the victim’s family for their cooperation during the investigation, which led to the arrest of four suspects. One of them managed to escape to the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas but was later apprehended.
However, Adhikari refrained from commenting on the recent death of one of the arrested suspects, Prabhas Mandal, who was killed in an encounter earlier this week. He stated that, as the Criminal Investigation Department is handling the case, he would not discuss the matter further at this time.
