Bhopal, March 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) center in Bhopal has issued a weather alert for several regions in Madhya Pradesh. Thunderstorms, lightning, and hail are expected in the next 24 hours.
On Friday, strong winds swept through various parts of the state. The IMD recorded wind speeds of up to 74 kilometers per hour in Agar district. Reports indicate that these high winds and storms have caused damage to wheat crops across the region.
The IMD stated that due to unstable weather conditions, there is a possibility of scattered to widespread thunderstorms and lightning in the coming hours, with hail expected in some areas.
Wind speeds were recorded at 54 km/h in Sehore, 46 km/h in Barwani, 43 km/h in Alirajpur, 41 km/h at Indore Airport, 39 km/h in Bhopal, 37 km/h in Pachmarhi, and 35 km/h in Dhar and Ujjain. Other areas like Ashoknagar recorded 33 km/h, Rajgarh 31 km/h, and Vidisha 26 km/h.
In eastern Madhya Pradesh, wind speeds reached 46 km/h in Narsinghpur, 41 km/h at Jabalpur Airport and Katni, 39 km/h in Sagar, and 30 km/h in Chitrakoot.
With the new storm warning issued by the Bhopal meteorological center, these strong winds are expected to continue. The department has warned of moderate thunderstorms with lightning and hail in Seoni and Shyopur districts.
Areas such as Guna, southern Gwalior, eastern Rajgarh, Ashoknagar, Mandla, Raisen (including Sanchi and Bhimbetka), Shivpuri, Morena, Jabalpur (including the airport and Bhedaghat), Katni, Vidisha (including Udaigiri), Bhopal (including Bairagarh Airport), northern Sagar, and Mauganj may experience light thunderstorms with electrical activity in the evening.
Farmers are advised to protect their livestock and postpone outdoor activities. This weather system is linked to a cyclonic circulation prevalent in the area, which may bring scattered thunderstorms and rain in central and eastern Madhya Pradesh in the coming hours.
The IMD has urged the public to follow safety guidelines and stay updated through official alerts. While heavy rainfall is not currently forecasted, the risk of strong winds and lightning remains imminent in affected districts. The situation is being closely monitored, and further information will be provided as the system progresses.
The cyclonic circulation and associated low-pressure area over southwestern Rajasthan and surrounding regions are the main causes of the expected activity. The IMD has placed Bhopal, Sehore, Raisen, Vidisha, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, and several other districts in central and western Madhya Pradesh under a ‘Yellow Alert.’
Authorities have advised people to avoid going outside during adverse weather conditions. The five-day forecast from March 20 to 24 indicates the possibility of light to moderate rain in several districts. A new, weaker western disturbance is expected to approach northwestern India from March 22, potentially bringing additional moisture and changes in weather.
