Kolkata, August 13: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Murshidabad district police, along with the police from the Jiyaganj station, conducted a joint operation that led to the arrest of two individuals along with a cache of weapons, magazines, and cartridges.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Khalek Sheikh and Suraj Mandal, both residents of the Baishnavnagar area in the neighboring Malda district.
Police Superintendent Sachin Makkar stated that the two accused were operating as arms suppliers. He explained, “Late Tuesday night, while they were attempting to deliver the weapons, the police apprehended them. The arrested individuals are currently in custody, and efforts are underway to capture the main leaders of the arms smuggling ring. We are also investigating who these weapons were intended for in Murshidabad.”
On Wednesday, the suspects were presented in the Baharampur district court, which granted a seven-day police custody for further investigation.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed to the police that they entered Murshidabad via the Dhuliyan ferry ghat. They traveled by train from Nimtita to Azimganj and then crossed the Ganges River.
Additionally, there are upcoming by-elections in the Rejinagar assembly seat in Murshidabad district. Some police officials suspect that these weapons were destined for Rejinagar, while other sources claim they were to be stockpiled in Jiyaganj for later smuggling into Bangladesh.
According to district police sources, inexpensive weapons from Munger in Bihar are frequently reaching Murshidabad through the Farakka, Umrapur, and Shamsherganj corridors. These weapons are spreading across Murshidabad and Nadia districts, with some even crossing the border into Bangladesh.
