Washington Huskies Womens Basketball Secures No. 6 Seed in 2026 NCAA Tournament

Seattle, March 16: The Washington Huskies women’s basketball team has clinched a No. 6 seed for the 2026 NCAA Tournament. After participating in the First Four in 2025, coach Tina Langley’s squad made significant progress this season, finishing with a record of 21-10 and 10-8 in Big Ten play. This included a victory over the USC Trojans in the conference tournament, although they were ultimately defeated by the UCLA Bruins, who secured a No. 1 seed on Sunday. The Huskies will now face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, who concluded the 2025-26 season with an impressive 27-6 record.

Coach Aaron Johnston’s team earned an automatic bid by winning the Summit League Tournament after a stellar regular season. The Jackrabbits were led by Brooklyn Meyer, an all-conference First Team honoree. The 6-foot-2 forward dominated in nearly every statistical category, averaging 22.4 points, 8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game.

Joining her on the All-Summit League First Team was guard Madison Mathiowetz, who contributed 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. This duo presents a formidable challenge for the Huskies, who have a strong core to rely on.

All season, junior guard Sayvia Sellers has been the driving force for the Huskies. An All-Big Ten First Team selection, she averaged a team-high 18.5 points and 3.7 assists, along with 2.7 rebounds per game. Sellers has also showcased her defensive skills with 48 steals and a career-high 24 blocks, despite a slight dip in her three-point shooting percentage to 35.9.

Sellers has received substantial support from All-Big Ten honorable mention Avery Howell, who averaged 13.7 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game after transferring to Seattle from USC. Additionally, former five-star recruit Brynn McGaughy, who made the conference’s All-Freshman Team, has also been impactful, averaging 9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while leading the team with 34 blocks.
