Mumbai: Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, known for the successful 2025 release ‘The Bengal Files’, is now shifting his creative focus following the completion of his acclaimed trilogy, which includes ‘The Taashkand Files’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, and ‘The Bengal Files’.
New Direction Towards Nation-Centric Cinema
In a recent interview, Agnihotri revealed that after finishing the trilogy, he plans to work on a different kind of film—one that inspires people towards nation-building. He shared that his upcoming projects will centre around the country and its future, aiming to motivate audiences to take active responsibility for India’s progress. This year, he is concentrating on three key areas: creating inspirational films, writing, and mentoring young talent.
Reflection and Renewed Vision
Speaking about his journey, Agnihotri said that after the release of ‘The Bengal Files’, he took two months off with his wife to reflect deeply on himself, society, the nation, and cinema. He expressed his desire to create films with renewed enthusiasm and consciousness. Announced in 2012, his trilogy was completed after much struggle and sacrifice, with two films becoming superhits and blockbusters, and ‘The Bengal Files’ leaving a lasting impact that will be discussed for years to come. Now, he aims to tell stories that encourage people to take charge of the nation’s destiny.
He further explained, “How do we confront today’s realities? How do we fight and rebuild India with hope and energy? It’s been a long time since we left India’s present and future in the hands of governments and politicians. Like the freedom struggle, now the youth must take the lead. That is why I want to showcase positive and inspiring stories.”
Focus on Meaningful Writing and Mentoring Young Filmmakers
Addressing social media, Agnihotri noted his active involvement since 2008 in spreading awareness. However, he expressed concerns about its current state, stating that it has become money-driven, fostering negativity, hatred, and psychological violence, with declining respect for women and the poor. As a result, he is moving away from social media towards long-form, academically valuable writing on platforms like Substack.
Additionally, Agnihotri is mentoring young filmmakers through his company ‘I AM Buddha’, which until now produced only his films. The company is now supporting and producing films by talented youth, especially from small towns who face language barriers and lack opportunities. Two such films have already been completed, edited, and submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification.
He is also working on research-based projects for OTT platforms and is personally engaged in a major film project currently under research, with no fixed deadline.
