Bhopal, February 21: A dispute over stray dogs escalated into violence in Bhopal’s Shravankanta Colony, leading to the arrest of two individuals accused of attacking two women with a knife and a sword.
According to Ayodhya Nagar police station’s SHO Mahesh Lilhare, the arrested suspects have been identified as Ashok Singh Chouhan and Nafees Ansari. Both have been charged under various sections of the law, and police are currently interrogating them.
The conflict reportedly began when Ashok Singh Chouhan, a resident of Sharda Kunj Colony, had an ongoing dispute with some locals regarding stray dogs. On the morning of the incident, he arrived at Shravankanta State Colony with a few associates and engaged in a heated argument with local residents about the dogs. Nafees Ansari was present with him during this confrontation.
As tensions escalated, Ashok Chouhan allegedly attacked Vandana Sen and Lakshmi Thakur, two women living in the colony. Both women sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Following the attack, the suspects fled the scene. Police conducted search operations across various locations and eventually apprehended Ashok Singh Chouhan and Nafees Ansari. Authorities also recovered the sword used in the attack.
Investigations revealed that residents had previously filed complaints about the increasing stray dog problem, stating that the dogs often chased pedestrians, bark aggressively, and posed a threat to children and the elderly. In response to these complaints, the municipal corporation’s dog squad had recently conducted an operation to capture stray dogs for sterilization, releasing them back into the area after the necessary procedures.
When residents learned that Chouhan had allegedly brought the dogs back into the colony, they protested. This disagreement quickly escalated into a violent clash. It is alleged that Chouhan returned with a sword and attacked the two women, resulting in their serious injuries.
Currently, police are investigating the entire incident to determine if any other individuals were involved. A police presence has been established in the area as a precautionary measure.
