Kolkata, April 27: A violent clash erupted between workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jagaddal, North 24 Parganas. Several individuals, including a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel, sustained injuries in the incident, which has been confirmed by officials.
The altercation occurred late Sunday night, involving stone-pelting, gunfire, and the use of homemade bombs. At least three people were reported injured, with one CAPF member shot in the leg. According to officials, the confrontation took place near a police station.
BJP workers alleged that posters and flags for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally were removed from Jalebi Math ground. When they approached the police station to file a complaint, TMC supporters gathered there, leading to a heated argument that quickly escalated into violence.
Footage from the scene depicted chaos late at night, with large crowds pushing each other and shouting slogans, while helmeted police and security personnel attempted to restore order. The aftermath showed damaged vehicles and debris scattered around.
Rajesh Singh, the BJP candidate from Jagaddal, filed a complaint at the local police station late at night. BJP leaders stated that both Singh and Arjun Singh, the candidate from Noapara, were present at the police station when the situation turned violent.
On the other hand, Amit Gupta, the TMC candidate from Bhatpara, accused BJP workers of attacking his supporters, tearing down party flags, and vandalizing their office. Gupta stated, “Bittu, one of our workers, was putting up banners and flags. We also have a party office there. Our people were assaulted, our flags were torn down, and our office was vandalized. We then filed a complaint with the police. When we arrived, Arjun Singh came with his security personnel and attacked us inside the station in the presence of the police.”
Meanwhile, Pawan Singh, the BJP candidate from Bhatpara, blamed the TMC for disrupting their street meeting and causing unrest. Singh remarked, “We were holding a street meeting when TMC members arrived. Manoj Pandey, the ward-17 councilor, also showed up with some boys and started creating a ruckus. We then approached the inspector in charge to file a complaint.”
He further added, “These individuals attempted to create a disturbance while we were putting up PM Modi’s posters. When we went to the police station, the issue was resolved. However, upon returning home, they began throwing stones and bombs at our houses. Several people were injured, including one personnel.”
Currently, police officials state that they are monitoring the situation closely, and further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
