Mumbai, 3 January. Star Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is fully ready to return to competitive cricket after recovering from an injury. The 31-year-old player sustained a spleen injury during fielding on the Australia tour.
Iyer will play for Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh on 6 January at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Shreyas Iyer has received clearance to play with certain conditions from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. Iyer spent 10 days at the COE for the final phase of his rehabilitation. As part of the return-to-play protocol, he also participated in a practice match on 2 January, during which he did not experience any discomfort.
Iyer has an impressive record in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In 2024, he scored 114 runs off 50 balls against Karnataka. He has consistently performed well in this major domestic one-day tournament, being Mumbaiโs highest run-scorer last season with 325 runs in five matches.
The injury occurred on 25 October 2025 at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the third ODI against Australia. While attempting a catch near the third-man boundary, Iyer lost his balance and fell on his ribs, causing a severe spleen injury and internal bleeding. Since then, he has been away from the cricket field.
The Indian ODI team for the New Zealand series will be selected on Saturday, with fitness being a key consideration. It remains unclear whether selectors will pick Iyer directly for international matches or prefer to evaluate him first in domestic competitions.
In Iyerโs absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad has impressed as the number four batsman. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Devdutt Padikkal has made a strong case for selection by scoring four centuries in five innings.
