New Delhi, March 28: India’s Vice President, C.P. Radhakrishnan, addressed the 20th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, organized by the Indian Express Group in New Delhi.
The Vice President stated that these awards not only honor professional achievements but also celebrate the spirit of fearless and truthful journalism. He highlighted that for two decades, these awards have recognized the legacy of Ramnath Goenka, which is filled with courage, freedom, and unwavering commitment to truth, especially during India’s most challenging times.
He noted that in an era where media is powerful yet subject to intense scrutiny and criticism, Goenka’s ideals continue to guide journalists.
During the Quit India Movement, Goenka demonstrated courage by shutting down newspapers in protest against British censorship. He also reminded the audience that as a member of the Constituent Assembly, Goenka contributed to discussions on issues like taxation on newspapers.
During the Emergency, Goenka symbolized press freedom and citizens’ right to expression by publishing blank editorials. He emphasized that despite facing jail time, power outages, financial losses, and harassment, Goenka remained steadfast in his commitment to democratic values and freedom of expression.
The Vice President remarked that Ramnath Goenka’s journey from Darbhanga to Chennai, and later as a Member of Parliament from Vidisha, reflects the spirit of unity in India’s diversity. He noted that Goenka published newspapers in several regional languages and English to reach a broader audience. These values continue to make the Indian Express a symbol of justice, courage, and freedom.
He stressed that discussions, debates, and dissent should aim to lead to decisions in the national interest, rather than cause division.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s message to free the nation from colonial mentality, he stated that media institutions like the Indian Express have the responsibility to present global and national events from an Indian perspective rooted in civilization.
The Vice President emphasized the need to highlight stories of progress, innovation, and grassroots change, stating that balanced journalism should showcase both challenges and achievements.
In closing, he congratulated all award winners and commended the organizers for maintaining the tradition of honoring excellence in journalism.
