New Delhi, March 28: India has expressed its support for Bangladesh’s call for justice regarding the massacre that occurred during Pakistan’s Operation Searchlight in 1971.
During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the systematic and targeted killings of millions of Bangladeshis during this campaign. He also noted the widespread sexual violence inflicted on women.
Jaiswal stated, “We all know that horrific atrocities were committed by Pakistan during Operation Searchlight in 1971. This massacre involved the planned and targeted killing of millions of innocent Bangladeshis and mass sexual violence against women. It forced millions of Bangladeshis to flee their homeland and seek refuge in India. It goes without saying that these brutalities shook the conscience of the world. Pakistan continues to deny its crimes. We stand with Bangladesh in its pursuit of justice.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman referred to the events of March 25, 1971, as a “pre-planned massacre,” marking one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s history. Bangladesh observed this day as Genocide Day to honor those who lost their lives in the oppression.
In a statement issued on Genocide Day, the Prime Minister said, “March 25, 1971, is commemorated as ‘Genocide Day.’ On this occasion, I pay my deepest tribute to all the martyrs. This date will remain one of the most shameful and brutal days in the history of freedom-loving Bangladesh.”
He emphasized that on that night, the Pakistani occupying forces executed one of the most “atrocious” massacres in history under Operation Searchlight, indiscriminately firing upon unarmed Bangladeshis at sites such as Dhaka University, Pilkhana, and Rajarbagh Police Lines, leading to numerous casualties.
Meanwhile, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations, Jaiswal mentioned that dialogue between both parties continues. India aims not only to maintain its multifaceted relationship with Bangladesh but also to strengthen and advance it further.
