Giza, May 9: Indian squash player Veer Chotrani secured a victory against fellow countryman Abhay Singh in the first round of the World Squash Championship held at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall.
Chotrani won the match after a grueling five-game battle, finishing with scores of 14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, and 11-2. This victory marks Chotrani’s second win against the 22nd-ranked Singh, having previously defeated him in three encounters.
After winning the first game in a tight tiebreak, Chotrani faced setbacks in the next two games. However, he rallied back to win the last two games, securing his spot in the second round.
Following his win, Chotrani expressed, “Playing against a fellow countryman in the first round of the World Championship is obviously tough. We don’t want any of us to exit in the first round, but that was the plan, and I’m very happy to have succeeded.”
He added, “The hard work I’ve put in over the past few weeks has boosted my confidence. Achieving this result is positive. Last time we played in India, I lost to Abhay in the finals, and I was very disappointed with that performance.”
Chotrani is set to face the world number one, Egypt’s Mustafa Asal, on Sunday.
In a field of 64 players, Ramit Tandon and Velavan Senthilkumar will begin their campaigns against Egypt’s world number 21 Karim El Torky and France’s world number 5 Victor Crouin, respectively.
India’s campaign in last year’s World Championship in Chicago ended in the second round, with Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, Abhay Singh, and Ramit Tandon all eliminated after competitive losses, while Velavan Senthilkumar exited in the opening round.
India has yet to win a medal in the singles events at the World Squash Championship.
