South Africa Declares First Innings at 425/9 in Second Test Against Australia

South Africa declared their first innings at 425/9 against Australia in the second Test, showcasing a strong comeback after a shaky start.

Gqeberha, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : South Africa made a remarkable comeback in the second Test against Australia, declaring their first innings at 425 for 9 despite a rocky start. The match took place at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha, where the hosts managed to secure Australia’s first wicket by the end of the third day.

After losing the toss and being put to bat, South Africa faced early challenges. Rain disrupted play for the first two days, allowing only 43 overs to be bowled, during which South Africa struggled significantly. They lost two early wickets, with Aiden Markram scoring 11 and David Bedingham going for a duck. By the ninth over, the team found themselves in a precarious position, having lost four batsmen for just 40 runs.

Captain Temba Bavuma stepped up to stabilize the innings, forming a crucial partnership of 52 runs with Ryan Rickelton for the fifth wicket. Rickelton scored 31 before being dismissed. Shortly after, South Africa lost their sixth wicket at a total of 110 runs, but Bavuma was well-supported by Marco Jansen. The duo put together an impressive 132-run partnership off 185 balls, with Jansen contributing 85 runs, including three sixes and nine fours.

Bavuma continued to anchor the innings, adding 183 runs for the eighth wicket with Simon Harmer, who scored 82 runs with 11 boundaries. Bavuma’s remarkable innings ended at 179 runs off 334 balls, featuring one six and 18 fours. South Africa faced 127.1 overs before declaring their innings.

In response, Australia faced four overs before the end of the day, managing just three runs while losing one wicket. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Nick Maddinson for a duck on the fourth ball of the innings, leaving the team without a score. Travis Head remained not out at one, while Scott Boland also remained not out at two, as they struggled to build momentum.

After losing the ODI series 1-2, Australia had won the first match of this three-Test series by 214 runs. However, South Africa has asserted their dominance in this second Test, aiming to secure a draw against Australia as they continue their efforts.
