Uttar Pradesh Takes Strong Measures for Road Safety and Zero Fatalities

Lucknow, August 16: The Uttar Pradesh government is intensifying its focus on road safety amid a rising number of vehicles. The administration has been issuing crucial directives to various departments aimed at achieving zero fatalities on the roads. This commitment is reflected in the enforcement actions taken by the transport department regarding compliance with road safety regulations. In the last financial year, the department collected ₹474 crore in fines, with an additional ₹172 crore collected in the current financial year.

During this period, over 2 million traffic violations were recorded. K.D. Singh Gaur, the Additional Transport Commissioner (Enforcement), emphasized that ensuring safe travel and enforcing traffic rules is a key responsibility of the transport department. To this end, enforcement teams have launched campaigns across the state against drivers who disregard regulations. The goal is not merely to collect fines but to instill a sense of responsibility among drivers regarding traffic rules and to enhance road safety.

In the financial year 2025-26, the enforcement teams issued approximately 1.5 million tickets, resulting in the collection of ₹474 crore in fines. This extensive enforcement effort aims to ensure compliance with road regulations. In the first four months of the current financial year 2026-27 alone, around 500,000 tickets have been issued, generating ₹172 crore in fines. This indicates that the transport department’s monitoring and enforcement actions regarding road safety are ongoing.

According to the transport department, the broader aim of this strict enforcement is to foster discipline among drivers concerning traffic rules. Adhering to these rules helps effectively control issues such as speeding, driving without necessary documents, overloading passengers or goods, and other traffic violations. Equal participation from both drivers and the general public is essential for safe traffic conditions.

The transport department’s enforcement actions are reinforcing this sense of responsibility. Such efforts could play a significant role in steering the state towards its goal of achieving zero fatalities on the roads.
