Mysterious Death of Police Officer in West Bengal Raises Questions

The mysterious death of police officer Jayanta Pal in Bankura raises concerns and questions about the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Bankura, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The mysterious death of a police officer in Bankura, West Bengal, has left many questions unanswered. The body of Inspector Jayanta Pal was found on the railway tracks just a day after his death.

Authorities reported that Pal was struck by the Aranyak Express near Kethradanga, close to Bankura city on Friday evening. An autopsy was conducted Saturday afternoon at Bankura Sammilani Medical College, and initial reports are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death.

Questions have already emerged regarding the incident. Witnesses indicated that the area where Pal’s body was discovered is about 50 meters from a recently closed railway gate, which had been replaced by a subway. This raises the question of why Pal chose to cross the tracks instead of using the subway, especially since the railway police impose heavy fines on those who cross closed gates.

Some eyewitnesses have suggested that Pal may have taken his own life. Sudam Sheet, a witness, recounted seeing a man stagger and jump in front of the oncoming train. He did not realize at the time that the individual was a police officer, but he firmly believes it was a suicide rather than an accident.

Pal’s family, which includes his 80-year-old father, wife, and son, remains skeptical about the suicide theory. Upon hearing the news, his sister and brother-in-law rushed to Bankura. Rajiv Mukherjee, Pal’s brother-in-law, expressed disbelief, stating that Pal would have confided in them if he were facing any issues.

Pal had recently resumed work at the Bankura police station after taking a 40-day medical leave due to illness. He had only worked a few days before the incident occurred. Investigators are currently looking into Pal’s mental state and are interviewing family members and colleagues, as well as examining his phone records.

This is not the first time Pal has been involved in a controversial incident. In February 2025, he survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound while serving as the officer in charge at Chandidala police station in Hooghly district. At that time, he was accompanied by a woman, and his actions raised questions about his judgment.

Authorities are now working to uncover the truth behind this tragic event.
