Mumbai, July 19: U Mumba TT has made history by winning its first title, thanks to the stellar performances of top draft pick Ahon Ray and one of India’s most promising young talents, Somdev Sengupta. On Sunday, U Mumba TT triumphed over Dabang Delhi TTC with a score of 5-2 at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium. Last year, U Mumba finished as the runner-up in the inaugural edition.
Ahon recently arrived in Goa after clinching the Under-15 Girls Singles title at the WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2026. She secured the championship for U Mumba by defeating Shrijani Chakraborty 11-4 in the decisive match of the Girls Singles.
Reflecting on the victory, Ahon Ray expressed, “Winning the title is incredibly exciting. It was a team effort, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Somdev, our coach, and the entire support staff. Our coach reminded us that U Mumba was the runner-up last year and encouraged us to go out, enjoy ourselves, and play our game. I’m grateful to everyone. Training with senior players has also been a great experience; they have been very supportive.”
Earlier in the match, Somdev Sengupta gave the team a strong start with an impressive 2-1 win over Himan Mandal (11-5, 11-10, 8-11). He then teamed up with Ahon to win the mixed doubles match after a tough three-game battle (11-9, 11-7, 9-11), giving U Mumba a significant lead, which Ahon later secured with her remarkable performance.
After the victory, Somdev shared, “I am truly very happy. Playing in UTT Juniors has always been a dream, and winning the title makes it even more special. Our coach has been a great help, and without him and the entire support staff, we wouldn’t have achieved this. Our senior players also inspired us throughout the tournament. They cheered us on during both the semifinals and finals, which meant a lot to us.”
