US Warns China Gained Strategic Edge via Cheap Venezuelan Oil

Washington: US Senator Marco Rubio, speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, revealed that under Nicolás Maduro’s regime, Venezuela became a strategic hub for China, Russia, and Iran in the Western Hemisphere. Rubio warned that China was acquiring Venezuelan oil at heavily discounted rates, thereby expanding its influence alarmingly close to the United States.

Rubio described the Maduro government as one led by a fugitive narcotics trafficker, which had turned Venezuela into an operational base for nearly every rival and adversary of the US. He emphasized that China obtained Venezuelan oil with discounts of around 20 dollars per barrel, and in many cases, paid nothing upfront, instead settling debts through barter arrangements.

“This is the oil of the Venezuelan people, and it was being exchanged with China as barter,” Rubio explained. He pointed out that at that time, China, Russia, and Iran all pursued their interests through Venezuela, posing a significant strategic threat to the United States.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Rubio stressed that the threat emerged not from a distant continent but within the US’s own hemisphere. This prompted Washington to take measures against the Maduro government to reverse the trend and restore America’s strategic hold.

Rubio also referenced the US-led oil ‘quarantine’, clarifying that it was not a blockade but effectively reduced China’s access to cheap Venezuelan oil. China can now purchase Venezuelan oil only at market prices, similar to other countries.

He further noted that revenues from restricted Venezuelan oil sales are being held in US-monitored accounts, with funds earmarked for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.

Addressing China’s broader strategy, Rubio alleged it relies more on economic pressure than ideology, targeting sectors like telecommunications, critical infrastructure, and mineral resources. He accused Chinese firms of securing influence through unfavorable agreements and debt traps.

However, Rubio claimed China’s influence in the region is waning, citing Panama’s decision to exit the Belt and Road Initiative and political changes occurring across Latin America.

Concluding, Rubio affirmed that the US aims to ensure Venezuela never again becomes a playground for Iran, Russia, and China, especially within America’s own backyard.
