Washington, February 2 – A US-based non-profit organization working for the rights of persons with disabilities has welcomed India’s Union Budget 2026. The organization said that the new initiatives related to skills development, employment, and assistive facilities represent a significant step towards empowering persons with disabilities.
The Voice of Specially Abled People (VOSAP), an advocacy group for disabled individuals, stated that the budget includes programs aimed at integrating persons with disabilities into the country’s economic mainstream.
Pranav Desai, founder of VOSAP, told news agencies that the budget has strengthened their long-term plan ‘Vision 2047’ for persons with disabilities. Under this plan, two new initiatives have been launched to enhance the economic participation of disabled people.
Vision 2047 by VOSAP aims for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in India’s long-term development, emphasizing dignified living, equal opportunities, and active social participation.
The group highlighted that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Disabled Skills Scheme and Disabled Support Scheme in the budget. These schemes are designed to provide skill training, increase employment opportunities, and offer assistive technologies to disabled individuals.
The organization said, “The introduction of two new programs for economic contribution by specially-abled people in the Union Budget 2026 gives a major boost to Vision 2047.” These schemes are expected to play a crucial role in making persons with disabilities self-reliant. The Disabled Skills Scheme will offer training and vocational education tailored to their needs, improving their chances of employment.
VOSAP congratulated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and said, “These measures will help build an inclusive ecosystem for Vision 2047 and a developed India, where dignity, accessibility, and opportunities define progress.”
The Disabled Support Scheme will provide assistive devices and technologies to enable greater independence in daily life and work for persons with disabilities.
According to the organization, these initiatives also align with the Accessible India Campaign, aiming to reduce barriers related to skills, employment, and technology that persons with disabilities often face.
However, the NGO emphasized that effective implementation on the ground is essential to ensure that the benefits reach the intended beneficiaries.
India is home to millions of persons with disabilities who continue to face challenges in accessing education, employment, and public facilities.
