Mathura, February 23: The festival of colors, Holi, has commenced in the Braj region with Phulera Dooj. The celebrations include flower Holi, Lathmar Holi, and Ladoo Holi, captivating everyone. In Phalain village, located in Krishna’s city of Mathura, a unique tradition has been observed for centuries, where villagers uphold a longstanding custom with devotion and faith.

Phalain village in Mathura district is renowned for its ancient Holika Dahan tradition, which serves as a reminder of the faith of devotee Prahlad and the test of fire. This village is often referred to as ‘Prahlad’s City,’ where Holika Dahan symbolizes not just the victory of good over evil, but also an example of unwavering faith, penance, and courage.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the Holika Dahan in Phalain is a remarkable festival of faith. Approximately 45 days before the event, the village priest begins a rigorous regimen of fasting, penance, celibacy, sleeping on the ground, and performing special rituals. Residing in the Prahlad temple, he eats only once a day and leads a life of purity.

On the night of Holika Dahan, after bathing and worshiping at Prahlad Kund, a massive Holika is ignited. As the flames roar and embers glow, the priest fearlessly walks barefoot through the blazing Holika or even runs across it. This spectacle is particularly special for the devotees.

This tradition is believed to have originated in the Satya Yuga, linked to the story of Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Holika, who sat in the fire holding Prahlad, was consumed by the flames due to his unwavering faith, while Prahlad remained unharmed. The priests in Phalain reenact this event. Villagers claim that this tradition has persisted for centuries without any priest ever being harmed.
