Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Flags Off Douhri Ghat-Audihar Train Service

New Delhi, May 12: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the Douhri Ghat-Audihar passenger train on Monday, which will soon extend to Varanasi. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing rail connectivity and passenger convenience in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh.

While addressing the gathering via video conferencing, the minister announced plans for a new express train connecting Purvanchal to Delhi, responding to long-standing demands for improved connectivity. This train will link key locations including Chapra, Ballia, Mau, Azamgarh, Shahganj, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, and Anand Vihar.

Vaishnaw emphasized that extending the Douhri Ghat-Audihar service to Varanasi will provide direct access to the cultural and commercial hub of Varanasi, benefiting daily commuters, students, traders, and pilgrims while strengthening rail connectivity in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The train will consist of eight coaches designed to offer comfortable and convenient travel for daily passengers and others using this route.

The minister noted that the Indara-Douhri Ghat meter gauge line was constructed over a century ago in 1904, but gauge conversion stalled until Prime Minister Modi’s administration. Since 2014, numerous long-pending railway projects, including gauge conversion and doubling, have been initiated across the country.

The Indara-Douhri Ghat line has now been converted to broad gauge, providing new rail facilities in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Vaishnaw revealed that the railway budget allocation for Uttar Pradesh was merely ₹1,109 crores in 2014, which has surged to approximately ₹20,012 crores since then.

Currently, around ₹1.2 lakh crores worth of railway projects are underway across Uttar Pradesh, marking an unprecedented scale of railway development in the state’s history. The minister also outlined several major railway infrastructure projects progressing in Uttar Pradesh, including a significant four-line corridor being developed along the Prayagraj-Kanpur-Agra-Delhi route.
