Mumbai, June 5: The bond between Bollywood legend Sunil Dutt and his son Sanjay Dutt has always been unique and captivating. Particularly during the filming of ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, their playful moments continue to be cherished in the film industry. At one point, Sunil humorously told the director, “I already scold him at home, so please don’t reprimand him on set.”
Sunil Dutt was born on June 6, 1929, in Khurd village, Jhelum district, now in Pakistan. He faced hardships early in life after losing his father. During the traumatic partition of 1947, he journeyed to India with his family. He worked various jobs, including as a bus conductor, to support his family. While pursuing his education, he gradually transitioned into radio, where his voice and personality gained recognition. This eventually led him to films, starting with ‘Railway Platform’ in 1955.
The 1957 film ‘Mother India’ catapulted him to stardom. He portrayed the role of a rebellious son, Birju, which remains memorable. It was during this film that he met actress Nargis, and their relationship blossomed into marriage, resulting in three children: Sanjay Dutt, Priya Dutt, and Namrata Dutt.
Throughout his career, Sunil Dutt delivered numerous blockbuster films but also faced challenges. After the failure of ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, he fell into debt, yet he never gave up. Gradually, he made a comeback and re-established his identity through hard work.
His relationship with Sanjay Dutt was particularly special. When they collaborated on ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, it created an emotional connection for the audience. It is said that Sunil intentionally altered Sanjay’s dialogues during shoots to help him learn something new with each scene. Sanjay jokingly remarked, “Shooting with Dad means a new exam in every take.”
Moreover, when directors reprimanded Sanjay for a scene, he would respond, “I already scold him a lot at home, so please don’t do it on set.”
Sunil Dutt was also active in politics, serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament. He passed away in 2005, but his legacy and contributions continue to resonate in the hearts of many.
