New Delhi, March 30: Many people often dismiss the burning sensation in their feet as a minor issue. However, medical experts warn that if this problem recurs frequently or persists for an extended period, it could signal a significant underlying health issue.

According to doctors, persistent burning in the feet is not merely a common symptom; it may indicate problems related to nerves, hormones, or the body’s metabolism. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize this sign promptly.

In medical terminology, this condition is referred to as Burning Feet Syndrome. It occurs when the nerves in the feet are affected for various reasons. Research indicates that when nerves do not function properly or become inflamed, individuals may experience sensations of burning, tingling, or a pins-and-needles feeling. In many cases, this issue worsens at night, disrupting sleep.

One of the most common causes of this condition is diabetes. Prolonged high blood sugar levels can damage small nerves, leading to a condition known as peripheral neuropathy, which causes burning, numbness, and tingling in the feet. Similarly, kidney-related diseases can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body, affecting the nerves and potentially causing a burning sensation.

Vitamin deficiencies, particularly a lack of Vitamin B12, are also significant contributors to this problem. A deficiency in this vitamin directly impacts nerve health, weakening their functionality and leading to sensations of burning or numbness in the feet. Additionally, hypothyroidism, or a deficiency in thyroid hormones, can slow nerve function, resulting in similar symptoms.

Poor blood circulation is another critical factor. When adequate blood does not reach the feet, there is a deficiency of oxygen and essential nutrients, which can lead to feelings of heaviness, pain, and burning. Certain neurological conditions, such as nerve damage or prolonged alcohol consumption, can also affect the nerves and produce similar symptoms.

Not only diseases but also daily habits can exacerbate this issue. Prolonged standing, wearing very tight shoes, excessive sweating in the feet, or fungal infections can all contribute to increased burning sensations.
