UN Chief Urges Nations to Revitalize Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Washington, April 28: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on nations to renew efforts to invigorate the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on Monday. He emphasized the importance of this treaty in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

Guterres stated that over the years, countries have established various rules and agreements aimed at halting the use, proliferation, and testing of nuclear weapons, ultimately striving for their complete elimination. The foundation of these efforts is the NPT. He made these remarks during the 11th Review Conference of the NPT, taking place at the UN headquarters in New York from April 27 to May 22.

He warned that the treaty is gradually weakening. Nations have failed to fulfill their commitments, leading to a decline in trust and credibility, while the risks of nuclear proliferation are increasing. Guterres noted that this conference presents a timely opportunity for collective action to safeguard humanity from the looming threat of nuclear destruction.

He expressed concern that the world seems to be forgetting the dangers posed by nuclear weapons, as the threat of their use resurfaces. For the first time in decades, the number of nuclear weapons is increasing, and discussions about testing are re-emerging.

“We must breathe new life into this treaty,” he urged, calling on nations to honor their commitments. He added, “Now is the time to recommit to disarmament and non-proliferation. This is the true path to peace. We need to strengthen the rules against nuclear testing, enhance monitoring systems, and take necessary steps to prevent nuclear war.”

Guterres also highlighted that rapidly evolving technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, are creating new threats. The treaty must address the relationship between these new technologies and nuclear weapons.

He concluded by stating that with collective support, the NPT can remain a strong foundation for a world free of nuclear weapons, even in these changing times. It is crucial to reassess the threat of nuclear weapons, rebuild trust, and take immediate action to eliminate this danger to humanity before it is too late.
