New Delhi, May 21: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stated that fossil fuels are the primary cause of the climate crisis. In a statement made on Wednesday, Guterres emphasized that achieving climate justice requires a swift, equitable transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. This statement was made following the adoption of a proposal by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) related to the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on climate change responsibilities.
Guterres welcomed the proposal, noting, “Those who have contributed the least to climate change are suffering the most. This injustice must end.” He further highlighted the clear path ahead: to keep the 1.5 degrees Celsius target within reach and to create a safe, just, and resilient future for all.
He also underscored that renewable energy has proven to be the most affordable and safest energy source available. According to Xinhua News Agency, on the same day, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft proposal with record voting, where 141 countries supported it, eight opposed it, and 28 abstained from voting.
The proposal welcomed the ICJ’s advisory opinion from July 2025, which outlined the responsibilities of nations regarding climate change. It stated that this opinion represents a significant interpretation of international law. The proposal calls on all countries to fulfill their responsibilities under international law to protect the Earth and its environment from climate change caused by greenhouse gases, as outlined by the court.
