UN Allocates $160 Million for Humanitarian Aid in 12 Countries Facing Crises

United Nations, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : The United Nations has announced the allocation of $160 million to provide life-saving assistance in 12 countries and regions facing severe humanitarian crises. This emergency funding was confirmed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on October 3.

The Central Emergency Response Fund has earmarked $150 million for countries including Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cuba, Mali, Niger, the occupied Palestinian territories, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen. In addition, OCHA has set aside an extra $10 million to address the urgent needs of people with disabilities and to make assistance more accessible and inclusive.

This funding initiative is part of a broader effort to reach 87 million people experiencing the most serious humanitarian needs this year. Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, stated that the new funding is crucial for helping those who might otherwise be left behind. He emphasized that financial resources alone are not enough; there must also be political will from leaders to facilitate access and remove barriers to aid for those whose lives are at risk.

OCHA highlighted that Afghanistan, the occupied Palestinian territories, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen are among the ten humanitarian crises where immediate diplomatic actions are needed to ensure assistance reaches the 11 million individuals selected for support this year.
