UGC Rules Spark Protests from Saints, Demand Immediate Withdrawal

Prayagraj: The controversy surrounding the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations continues to escalate. After political leaders, now saints and religious figures from various districts in Uttar Pradesh have voiced strong opposition, demanding the government revoke the new rules.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand, speaking to a news agency, stated, “No caste is inherently unjust by birth, nor is any individual inherently just. Every community has good and bad people. While individuals can commit injustice, no caste as a whole is completely just or unjust. The UGC’s new regulations are creating divisions by pitting one caste against another. This misguided step could cause significant harm to Hindu society. Therefore, this law must be withdrawn immediately.”

He further criticized the UGC, saying, “Everyone knows what the UGC stands for. It seems to be a plan to create conflict within the Hindu community by setting one caste against another, aiming to weaken and eventually dismantle the social fabric. Why has the government introduced such a law that incites discord among Hindu castes? What is the rationale behind this?”

Commenting on the resignation of Bareilly’s City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Shankaracharya remarked, “His decision to resign reflects the depth of his pain and disappointment. Such a significant act will be recorded in history and reveals the extent to which the Uttar Pradesh government has impacted those who uphold Sanatan Dharma.”

Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya also addressed the issue, stating that a letter has been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the withdrawal of the new UGC regulations. He warned that these rules could push 35 percent of girls from the general category into exploitative situations and increase crime rates across the country. The government must reconsider these regulations to ensure that children from the general category receive fair and safe educational opportunities.

The ongoing opposition from religious leaders highlights the growing concerns about the social and educational impact of the UGC’s new rules. Calls for the government to act swiftly to reverse the decision are intensifying across Uttar Pradesh.
