Varanasi: The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new guidelines have sparked intense debate, with allegations that they discriminate against the Hindu community and upper castes. The controversy has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders as well. Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati described the UGC regulations as a serious threat to Sanatan Dharma.
According to the Shankaracharya, caste divisions in Sanatan Dharma were traditionally not meant to promote conflict but were established to ensure the livelihood and security of individuals. These age-old practices aimed to maintain social stability. However, the recent UGC rules have created opposition between castes, inevitably leading to clashes. He warned that this poses a danger to the entire Sanatan Dharma, likening the situation to a machine that urges people to “fight and die.”
He emphasized the importance of opposing the new UGC regulations and called for their immediate withdrawal, stating that these rules harm the essence of Sanatan Dharma. While the Supreme Court can examine whether there are constitutional errors in the law, it is not responsible for halting it entirely. The legislation was passed by Parliament, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear that all must abide by the law.
Swami Avimukteshwaranand pointed out that the real issue is that the upper-caste society is actively protesting on the streets, but the other communities have not yet joined. He urged these groups to participate in the opposition, as the conflict affects their interests as well. He warned that if the Hindu community splits into two opposing sections, it would amount to a complete division of the community, which he strongly opposed.
In a separate comment, the Shankaracharya addressed the recent plane crash involving Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. He said that if there are any doubts about the incident, they should be thoroughly investigated by a committee to prevent public confusion and ensure a clear conclusion.
