Udit Raj Questions Relevance of Padma Awards, Cites Political Motives

New Delhi: On the eve of Republic Day, the central government announced the Padma Awards, with Bhagat Singh Koshyari receiving the Padma Bhushan. However, Congress leader Udit Raj expressed concern over the diminishing significance of these awards.

In a conversation, Udit Raj questioned whether the awards are now being given to individuals who oppose the Constitution and have contributed to toppling a government. He pointed out that while elections were underway in Bihar, discussions about who should receive the Bharat Ratna and other awards were suddenly taking place. According to him, this has greatly reduced the prestige associated with these honours.

He further stated that awarding the Padma Bhushan to Bhagat Singh Koshyari is controversial, as Koshyari is alleged to have violated the Constitution and played a role in ending a government. Udit Raj suggested that such awards are being used merely for political advantage, thereby undermining their value.

Udit Raj also supported the remarks made by Karti Chidambaram regarding the Padma Awards, describing them as accurate.

Addressing former Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed’s recent statements, Udit Raj stressed that the priority should be to protect the Constitution and democracy. He shared that he left the BJP not entirely out of choice but due to pressure from the RSS, which did not want him to contest elections. He recalled an offer from the BJP leadership to refrain from contesting the Lok Sabha polls, which led to his departure.

Referring to former President Ram Nath Kovind, Udit Raj mentioned that before becoming President, Kovind was not given preference as a candidate during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He added that when he became an MP on 20 May 2014, Kovind personally approached him for a recommendation within the BJP. Udit Raj reflected that while Kovind achieved the presidency, he too had opportunities such as ministerial offers.

On Shakeel Ahmed’s decision to leave the party, Udit Raj expressed that it was not the right move. Despite differences, he argued that power should not be everything. He recalled that Ahmed had once held significant positions including General Secretary, senior spokesperson, and minister in two ministries.

Udit Raj’s comments highlight ongoing debates about the political implications of national honours and the internal dynamics within major political parties as they navigate democratic challenges.
