Washington, March 6: A senior Pentagon official has informed lawmakers that the United States’ new defense strategy aims to counter China’s dominance in the Indo-Pacific region. This highlights Washington’s increasing focus on this area as a central point of global strategic competition.
Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby told Congress members that the Indo-Pacific has become the most critical area for U.S. military planning due to its economic and strategic significance. During a hearing reviewing the administration’s National Defense Strategy, Colby stated, “This strategy focuses our military efforts on maintaining a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region, the world’s largest market.”
He emphasized that Washington does not seek confrontation with Beijing but aims to prevent any single power from establishing dominance in the region. Colby remarked, “We understand that China is a very powerful country that is expanding its military capabilities at an extraordinary level. However, we want to make it clear that we do not desire conflict with China. On the contrary, we want to avoid it.”
The U.S. goal is not to achieve total dominance in the region but to ensure stability by maintaining a balance of power. He stated, “We are not trying to weaken China or force a change in its regime. Instead, our objective is to prevent China from becoming the dominant power in the Indo-Pacific.”
According to the Pentagon, this strategy focuses on deterring potential aggression along the “First Island Chain,” a crucial strategic line extending from Japan to Taiwan and the Philippines. Colby noted, “Maintaining an effective defense posture along the First Island Chain is a primary goal of the U.S. armed forces.”
He added that this strategy reflects a significant shift in U.S. defense planning, prioritizing the Indo-Pacific while encouraging allied nations to play a larger role in regional security. Colby stated, “While the U.S. military is unmatched globally, its resources are not unlimited. Potential adversaries are continuously enhancing their power and capabilities.”
Colby indicated that Washington expects its partners in Asia and Europe to increase defense spending and contribute more to collective security. He urged, “We are calling on these prosperous and capable allies to contribute to collective defense.” The strategy emphasizes strengthening cooperation with allies like Japan, Australia, and South Korea to maintain regional stability and deter potential aggression.
During the hearing, lawmakers from both parties raised concerns about how the U.S. will manage ongoing military operations in other regions, including the Middle East, while focusing on China. Colby defended the administration’s strategy, asserting that recent military operations demonstrate the effectiveness of the U.S. military.
He stated, “With the support of Congress, the U.S. military will remain the world’s premier and unmatched fighting force, which has recently showcased its capabilities impressively.” He referenced operations like “Midnight Hammer,” “Absolute Resolve,” and “Epic Fury.” The aim of this strategy is to make potential adversaries aware of the strength of the U.S. military, encouraging them to avoid conflict.
Colby concluded, “We hope that our potential adversaries will recognize the unmatched and highly capable U.S. armed forces, along with our allies’ capable forces, and conclude that peace and restraint are the better paths for them.”
