Bhubaneswar, May 12: Concerns over deteriorating law and order in Odisha have intensified following two violent incidents. On Monday afternoon, a man was fatally stabbed in a road dispute in the Belpahar area of Jharsuguda district.
Jharsuguda’s Superintendent of Police, G.R. Raghavendra, reported that the altercation escalated into a deadly attack around 2 PM near Gandhi Nagar. The victim was a motorcyclist who succumbed to his injuries.
The main suspects, Chand Banchhor and Babu Banchhor, had visited their relative Rinki Banchhor’s home the previous day. While returning to Burla in a rented vehicle with Pradeep Banchhor and Pushpa Banchhor, their car allegedly collided with the motorcycle of victims Akash Sahu and Rahul Mahato, leading to a heated argument.
In a fit of rage, Chand and Babu reportedly retrieved sharp weapons from their vehicle and attacked both men. Mahato was severely injured and rushed to a nearby community health center, where he was pronounced dead. Sahu was admitted to the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital for treatment.
Police have detained three suspects—Pradeep, Pushpa, and driver Chudamani Kalet—while the main accused, Chand and Babu, remain at large.
In a separate tragic incident, 38-year-old Ajit Kumar Sahu from Nayagarh district was allegedly murdered by members of a stone mafia early Monday.
Police sources revealed that Ajit and his friend Santosh Kumar Pradhan had intercepted two trucks loaded with laterite stones around 12:50 AM at Kadlibandh. They claimed they were collecting payments and mediating a dispute between the parties involved.
Soon after, Puranchandra Nayak, a truck owner, arrived at the scene. During discussions between the truck owner and the victims, several other suspects joined the confrontation, which quickly escalated into violence.
During the scuffle, one suspect allegedly drew a sword from a Bolero vehicle, while another grabbed Ajit’s neck. As he fell to the ground, the assailants repeatedly struck him with the sword, causing severe injuries and severing his right wrist.
Following Ajit’s death, local residents expressed their outrage, blocking roads and demanding strict police action against the perpetrators and a halt to illegal stone mining activities.
