Chennai, April 19: In a significant political development ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, C. Joseph Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK), has extended support to an independent candidate following the disqualification of the party’s official nominee in the Edappadi constituency of Salem district.
This decision came after the nomination papers of the TVK candidate were rejected during the scrutiny process. In response to this setback, Vijay announced that the party would now support independent candidate Premkumar, who is contesting from this constituency.
In a post on the social media platform X, Vijay referred to Premkumar as his former associate and a past administrator of his fan club, affectionately calling him ‘brother.’
He stated that the party had reached a consensus to support Premkumar under the current circumstances and urged party workers, supporters, and voters in the Edappadi constituency to unite behind him.
Vijay appealed to voters to cast their ballots for Premkumar, who has been assigned the ‘television set’ symbol by the Election Commission. He specifically highlighted the symbol’s number on the ballot, encouraging voters to recognize it and support Premkumar’s victory.
In his message, Vijay remarked, “Although we cannot contest directly due to our candidate’s disqualification, we still consider Premkumar our representative in this constituency.”
He urged TVK officials and workers to collaborate and ensure a decisive victory for the independent candidate.
The actor-turned-politician also indirectly targeted those attempting to hinder the party’s electoral prospects, stating that Premkumar’s victory in Edappadi would serve as a lesson to those who tried to obstruct the party’s symbol and its participation in the electoral process.
The Edappadi constituency, represented by senior AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, is expected to see a tough contest, as the entry of the TVK-supported independent candidate adds a new dimension to the electoral battle.
As the election campaign reaches its final stages, Vijay’s endorsement is likely to energize grassroots supporters and impact the voting dynamics in the constituency.
