Mumbai, April 19: In the wake of the Lok Sabha’s failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde have criticized the opposition’s role, labeling it a missed opportunity for women’s empowerment. Political rhetoric surrounding this issue continues to escalate across the nation.
Shaina NC stated in an interview with a news agency, “The Nari Shakti Vandan Bill could have made history. Creating history requires political will and sensitivity, which the Prime Minister has shown, but the opposition has not. When we discuss this, we must remember that in 1950, there were only 22 women in Parliament. Today, in 2026, there are 74 women, making up nearly 13 to 14 percent. Recent statistics show that out of 4,123 seats, only 390 are held by women. This change is essential because it is our right.”
She further remarked, “The Prime Minister has shown sensitivity. The opposition has merely opposed women’s reservation and disrespected women. I want to ask the opposition, when this was a ‘win-win’ opportunity, where 50 percent of seats were being increased, what were we taking away from men?”
On the issue concerning an IT company in Nashik, Shaina NC emphasized, “The Maharashtra government is strongly against forced conversions. In Nashik, young women are being misled, their videos are being recorded, and they are later blackmailed.”
She described this as a conspiracy, asserting that the Mahayuti leadership is committed to addressing this issue and ensuring that the perpetrators receive strict punishment to prevent future incidents.
Mayor Ritu Tawde also spoke out, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, which was a crucial bill for women’s respect and empowerment, proposing 33 percent reservation. However, it was reportedly stalled due to a lack of support from Congress during voting, leading to its failure. This has made it clear to women across India that the Congress party is against women’s empowerment and does not want women to advance or receive their rights.”
Tawde added, “The Akhil Bharat Achal Gachchha Jain Sangh has organized a grand ‘Parna’ ceremony. I am very happy to be here, celebrating the silver jubilee of the ‘Varshitap Parna Mahotsav’ led by the revered Kavindra Sagar Suri Ji Maharaj, and I am experiencing a positive energy.”
