Patna, April 19: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has criticized the opposition for the failure to pass the constitutional amendment bill related to women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha. He stated that this incident disrespects women’s empowerment. It was unprecedented in the history of democracy for members of Congress, TMC, DMK, and the Samajwadi Party to celebrate such a setback.
During a press conference at the BJP state office on Sunday, he remarked that the opposition believes that women from affluent families can become MPs, but they do not want women from poor families to hold such positions. He pointed out that while Rahul Gandhi’s sister can become an MP and Akhilesh Yadav’s wife can too, Congress cannot accept that women could win one-third of the seats from Uttar Pradesh.
He emphasized that this was a historic day when the bill for constitutional amendment was introduced. Three bills were presented, all of which faced opposition. This clearly indicates that had the bill been passed, there would have been at least 122 women legislators in Bihar, whereas currently, there are only 29 women in the assembly.
Chief Minister Chaudhary noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar have consistently worked to empower women. When the NDA government was formed in Bihar, they implemented a 50% reservation for women in panchayat and municipal elections. Today, Bihar has 50% reservation, with over 59% of women winning elections.
He added that the Modi government aimed to assure that through this bill, the number of MPs would increase from 543 to 816, with 272 of them being women. Unfortunately, he lamented that there are opponents in the country who are more concerned about issues outside India. Congress, TMC, DMK, SP, and RJD will have to answer the public for their opposition.
He firmly stated that Congress has never provided reservation to any community in the country. Whenever reservations were granted, the BJP has supported them. He mentioned that neither Lalu Yadav nor Congress has ever given reservations.
Chief Minister Chaudhary concluded by recalling that after independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru campaigned for the reservation of Dalits and Adivasis. He asserted that the NDA will unite to campaign against the betrayal faced by women in the country and will demand accountability from those responsible.
