Turkey Warns of Escalating Tensions After Attack on Vessel in Black Sea

Istanbul, May 30: Turkey has issued a warning to all warring parties to avoid actions that could lead to “uncontrolled and serious escalation” following an attack on one of its vessels in the Black Sea.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reported that a Turkish-flagged ship, registered under Vanuatu, was transporting dry goods from Ukraine’s Odesa port to Turkey when it was struck by a drone on the night of May 28. Two Turkish crew members sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The Turkish Consulate General in Odesa is closely monitoring the condition of the Turkish nationals aboard the ship.

The ministry expressed concerns about the recent increase in military activity in the Black Sea, highlighting the potential threats and risks to the region, as well as the adverse effects on Turkey. It reiterated its warning to all parties involved to refrain from actions that could exacerbate the conflict.

Furthermore, the ministry emphasized the importance of ensuring safe navigation for civilian vessels in the Black Sea and maintaining valid calls for dialogue to end hostilities.

In addition, the ministry reminded relevant parties that Turkey is prepared to develop effective measures aimed at preventing further escalation of the conflict and accelerating the peace process.

Meanwhile, Romania’s Defense Ministry reported that a Russian drone breached Romanian airspace and collided with a residential apartment building, causing a fire and injuring two individuals. The injured were transported to the Galati County Emergency Clinical Hospital. The ministry noted that drone strikes targeting areas in Ukraine near Romania’s river border resumed overnight from Thursday to Friday.
